Archos 70 Review. 250gb and Android 2.21!

My Archos 70 Internet tablet w/250gb arrived Thursday 12/16/2010, and I had it updated to android 2.21 within 15 minutes of unboxing it. Archos has already update the 2.21 firmware once to address some early WiFi and processor management issues.   I also have their older Archos 7 Home tablet, and was looking forward to see if they had learned anything.  They have!

First of all, the screen on the 70 uses capacitance to sense your touch.  It also recognizes two fingers (multitouch!). They've added a graphics co-processor to help speed up the UI (User Interface) as well as games, and with an ARM Cortex A8 1GHz processor the experience is delightful.  This Archos 70 has removed the impatience and frustration I developed using their 7 Home.

The Specs...
- Dimensions:  201 x 114 x 14 mm – 400 grams / (7.91 x 4.49 x 0.55 inch – 14 oz)
- Screen:  WVGA 800 x 480 pixels, 7'' TFT LCD, 16 million colors. Capacitive multitouch.
- Storage: 250 GB Hard Drive. The hard drive version is 4mm thicker than the flash memory version.
- Wireless:  WiFi (802.11 b/g/n), and Bluetooth 2.1 EDR.
- Webcam:  Front facing, VGA resolution (640 x 480).
- Outputs:  Mini HDMI output. (Mini HDMI / HDMI cable sold separately), and stereo headphone jack.
- Controls:  Volume +/- rocker, and Power/Hold/Reset button. On-screen  Back/Menu/Home/Search icons.
-  Other:  Microphone, Stereo Speakers, G-sensor, and Kickstand.

This model in Archos' generation 8 line-up has the same media features as all the others do. Great music playback capability.  Great Photo and Video display capabilities as well.  They all have access to Archos' Appslib application store, and can be easily "hacked" to add the standard Google apps and Market access. I'll refer you to my review of the Archos 32 and Archos 43, as well as the technical page for the 70 at Archos.com for more info about the media capabilities.  Where the 70 stands out is that it and the 101 get capacitive (skin sensing) screens, and that means interaction is easier and multitouch comes in to make the web browser and photo gallery app easier to use.  Android apps that can take advantage of multitouch also work better when it is available.  Since the 70 has a front facing camera, it also comes with the FRING video chat application. The 7" screen makes every app more enjoyable.  text is larger.  Images are larger. Videos are larger.  GAMES are larger!  Yet at 7" this tablet is nearly the perfect size to enjoy at home as well as take with you when travelling.  Steve Jobs obviously hasn't used a 7" tablet if he thinks they are dead in the water.  Expect a smaller iPad from Apple eventually.  ;)

Hard Drive:  As all the data is on a hard drive, expect load times to take a little longer than they would on the Flash memory version. You have room for far more apps and media on this version though, and you don't have to swap out or even bring along microSD cards when you need more space.

Bluetooth:  The smaller tablet from Archos also have Bluetooth, but at the 7" size the potential becomes more interesting.  You can pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse with it.  Add a good word processor from the android market and you'll have a serious work setup. The kickstand props the 70 at a perfect angle for viewing, and it will even stand the 70 up on end if you don't mind a little wiggle. Bluetooth can also be used to pair a $25ish GPS module to the 70, and with Google navigation it becomes a very functional GPS nav unit.  I find I can also send pictures to my Canon Printer over Bluetooth, and the printer will then print them out. Lastly, you can send the audio output of the 70 to Bluetooth headphones or speaker docks.
E-Reader: At 7" the 70 is also the same size or larger than most dedicated e-readers out there.  You can find Kindle (Amazon), Nook (Barnes and Noble), Google Books, and Aldiko ebook apps for the 70, and it becomes a competitive e-reader that doesn't discriminate on where your books came from.   I've tried several e-readers.  I've tried several tablets.  At this point the Archos 70it stands out as the best solution to both categories. With battery life rated Music up to 36 hours, Video up to 7 hours, and Web surfing up to 10 hours, expect around 10 hours for ebook reading before needing to recharge.

3D Games: Archos added a graphic accelerator with 3D OpenGL ES 2.0 capabilities to this series of tablet.  It means the 70 can play animated 3D games as well as your X-Box or PlayStation.  An example 3D game is included, and does a good job of demonstrating the power you have in your hands. The G-sensor in the 70 allows the tablet itself to become the controller of the game. A few more example games can be downloaded from this link: Archos.com.  Yes, you can play these games on the smaller gen 8 tablets.  No they are not as cool there as they are on the 70!  Hook the 70 to your HDTV and play on the BIG SCREEN with the 70 as controller!
Build:  Although the 70 appears to be all plastic, it is plastic molded over a steel frame. The screen is glass.  I find the body stiff and durable.  You hear the occasional squeak of plastic case edges meshing when handling the 70.  You can feel the hard drive spin, although my 50 year old ears don't hear it. The kickstand is plastic and flexes a little. There are rubber feet on the back to keep it from sliding on a table. Unlike previous Archos tablets there are no dock ports to be blocked when standing it on its lower (long) edge. Cable jacks are all on the left end, or the top edge when stood on it's kickstand end. You can't recharge it over USB, so keep track of the include AC charger. The screen is viewable from a wide angle left and right, and only darkens up when viewed from low angles to the bottom edge. Speakers sound better than those on the 43, but won't replace your home theater speakers for audio quality.  Two or three people at a time could easily enjoy watching a video on the 70.

Summary:  I like it.  While the resistive screens on Archos' smaller tablets are some of the most responsive I've tested, the capacitive screen on this 70 is a joy to use. My wife has already laid claim to it for her Angry Birds addiction, as the version on her iPhone is "too small!".  Video viewing is a delight, with good audio from the stereo speakers. It makes a reasonable digital Photo Frame if you're charging it on your desktop and not otherwise using it. Archos appears to have learned their lesson. They have been responsive to owner complaints since it came out, with a firmware update that addressed the most major ones. Check out their support forum HERE.   Given that Samsung wants $550 for its Galaxy Tab, this $318 Archos 70it tablet with very similar specs is a winner. If you don't need the 250gb hard drive, give the $268 8gb version a look.

  1. how is the battery life? i'm ready to click "buy" but have reservations about the Hard Drive battery life

    ReplyDelete
  2. "battery life rated Music up to 36 hours, Video up to 7 hours, and Web surfing up to 10 hours". I haven't had a chance to test the endurance myself, as I generally just charge it every night. With the hard drive spinning down when not in use, I suspect the real times will closely match what Archos states in the specs. Your result are free to vary. ;)

  3. does this model have a usb host?, and if so, would a usb hub work in it?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yes it does, although finding the right cable is a chore. The hub should have its own power supply though.

    ReplyDelete
  5. what about using a "portable"(usb powered) external hard drive...any problems?

    ReplyDelete
  6. The problem is that the USB port has limited power to use. That said, I so far don't have a cable to test. You should check forum.archosfans.com for more info. Post your questions in their archos 70 forum.

  7. When you watch a movie, will it skip and jump because of the hard drive is getting in and out of sleep mode?

    ReplyDelete
  8. No. I notice no problems in video, and have watched two complete movies so far. One on the 70s screen, and one over HDMI on my 45" HDTV.

  9. Any updates on the battery life on normal use?

    ReplyDelete
  10. No. We use the 70 off and on, and I don't check the battery status unless it warns me. I plug it in when I sit down at my PC. It hasn't been below 25% as far as I know, but I'm not keeping track of how much time is spent using it between charges.

  11. Not sure if it has been mentioned but can you replace the battery ? Or is it like Apple's ?

    TIA

    ReplyDelete
  12. Somewhere I read about opening the back to unplug the battery on occasion when the system seriously hangs up. It doesn't appear to be easy, and is not mentioned in the user manual. The battery is also likely to be unique to this device, and finding a replacement won't be easy. I have a feeling Archos would be where you would send it to have the battery replaced. Whether they will offer that service out-of-warranty is yet to be determined.

  13. Can this thing play rmvb files? Most of my video are in rmvb format. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  14. From archos specifications page: "With the above codecs, the device can play video files with the following extensions: AVI, MP4, MKV, MOV, WMV, MPG, PS, TS, VOB, FLV, RM, RMVB, ASF, 3GP".

So yes, it appears it will. I don't have any to try though, or I'd be happy to test it for you.

  15. I am about to switch from an 8gb to a 250gb due to transfer speeds from a 32gb sd card being really slow when transferring files north of 4gb+.

Have you tried transferring over video, for example, over 4gb+? If so, how long does it take for the player to recognize the file(s)? Thanks in advance.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm sorry, but I don't have any video files over 2gb. Can't answer your question.

  17. Wow 4d. I am sold. can you tell me which bluetooth gps to use and what software I need to install on google for it to recognize it. or will google maps automatically be there pogo google maps recognize it as if it was a built in device also do you have a source where I can find out how to root the device.

thank you for your fantastic and very detailed review

    ReplyDelete
  18. To test it for navigation, I bought the TomTom MKII from Amazon.com, and although I thought it wasn't working the first time I tried, it turns out after changing a setting or two it does work fine. Once paired it works with Google maps and the Google Nav program that appeared when I added the Google apps and Market. It was also recognized by a GPS status app I found on the Market. You'll have to check out any other software as I don't really need to use it as a GPS NAV unit.

Rooting the 70 is also something you'll have to research yourself. I believe with the latest firmware Archos has made it very hard to do.

  19. Hi I was wondering how bad the vibration on this device is?,also I am having second thoughts on this device since it is hdd based and not flash
should I return it and get the flash model?.
Many people are saying how the battery drains quickly on 250gb model.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I can tell the hard drive is spinning when it does, but there is no real sense of "vibration". I don't have the flash version to compare battery duration, so can't advise you there. I bought the hard drive version for increased media and app storage space.

  22. What is the display like? The nr of pixels is pretty similar to the 43. The screen on the 43 looks pretty good but does the increase of size to 7" degrade the quality of the picture?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Except for the first two, the photos above are actual shots of my 70's screen. Where the larger screen comes in handy is that you don't need it so close to you to read text. A 70 at arms length looks just as good as a 43 held a foot from your eyes. I love the 70's screen. It's just not as portable as the 43.

  24. hi 4D, i have read about the 256MB memory in the Archos 70, how much is still left when you first unbox your device ?

i think it will too little for a system memory since most Apps are installed on the system ram.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The Hard drive 70 has more system RAM than the flash memory version. I assume Archos did that knowing with 250gb of space more apps would be installed. You may be right on it being too little, but I haven't bumped into that limit yet.

    4D

    ReplyDelete
  26. Just to clarify, the 70 has more apps storage allocated than the rest of the gen8 series; the RAM is the same across all of them at 256MB with the exception of the 28, which has only 128MB, no?

    ReplyDelete
  27. There are two 70s, and the one with a hard drive has more RAM I was told. I have no info on the 28 as I won't be buying one. Thanks for your comment, Michael.

  28. Hmm... I can't find any confirmation one way or the other, anywhere! Thank you for the fantastic reviews, they really help (and hinder - I keep finding things I want to try myself!).

    ReplyDelete
  29. Android 2.2 has apps to SD so i wouldn't worry about limiting storage for you apps :).

    Btw happy newyear!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks for tons of useful info!! One question: can you used the hard drive as a portable hdd via usb and Windows Explorer? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yes. When plugged into the PC and you pick "Mount" instead of "Charge Only" the hard drive appears as a removable storage drive to the PC (my PC has Win7-64). Your results may vary depending on your PC.

  32. Thank you so much for that super and very helpful review.
I'm not an Apple fan... the reason why I was looking for a tablet different from the Ipad. After good tests read on French sites, I needed a user opinion about that good-looking device before thinking of buying it. And thanks to you, I'm no longer hesitating!
    Happy new year from France.

  33. does the 70it has a GPS capability ?? will I able to use Google Map to search locations ??

    ReplyDelete
  34. No, the 70 does not have GPS built in to it. It has bluetooth though, and can be paired with an external bluetooth GPS unit. Once done, it is possible to use it as a navigation unit, but a little clutsy. Location services works pretty good with just WiFi though. And you can use Google maps with no GPS. It will let you seacth the world, but just won't know where you are on it.

  35. hi. thanks very much for the great review and feedbacks. just another request that will shed some light on the (relative) battery life of archos 70 250g. can you please try a video rundown test (preferrably on power saver CPU mode) of your a70 250gb from 100% full charge down to a certain battery percentage level of your liking (preferrably close to 0%) then advise us what CPU performance were you running at, what power options were turned on/off, what screen brightness and volume level, what res. video and codec were you running, etc. TIA and hoping you could shed some light on this for all of us here =)

  36. Hi! Thanks for a nice review! What is the format of the HDD? Fat32 or something else? What I am fishing for is: Is it possible to have files >4gb on the harddrive?

Does the tablet get warm after heavy use?

    Thx
    Petter

    ReplyDelete
  37. Right now 4gb is the limit for single files. Archos provides a tool to divide larger video files into <4gb chunks so you can install them on the 70. The tablet does warm up in use, but gets nowhere near hot. No thermometer to measure with, sorry.

  38. Thx for the fast answer!

Have you tried playing files through usb-port from an usb stick (or overall tested usb-host funcunality with adapter)?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Sorry, Petter. I haven't found a need to find the right cable. The 70 with a 250gb hard drive has far more room than I need for media.

  42. Hi
I am a blogger myself but of a different realm, none the less an avid fan of your reviews.

The one thing and the only thing i couldnt find anywhere on net about the archos 70 internet tablet was what the screen is made of. You mentioned its glass and made my day.
As I was skeptic of buying a tablet without onboard 3g but given its price, size and hard disk capacity, its seems best of the current lot.
    Thanks a ton mate.

  43. I've had my A70 250GB for a week now and I simply love it. I could not be happier: price; features; fun...Every home should have one.

  44. which kind of usb port does it have onboard
    micro or mini?
as i already have an adapter for mini usb to usb female.
please let me know. also where can i buy the 250gb model been looking everywhere :-(

    ReplyDelete
  45. From the User Manual: A micro USB-B to USB-A host cable is required.

I suggest keeping and eye on store.archos.com for availablity. It comes and goes, as the 70 is in high demand.

  52. Great review, even if I'm a little late to the party.

Now, if I were to hook up a 3G USB connection is this Archos capable of connecting to a network for internet browsing (without using wifi)? Just asking,...

    ReplyDelete
  53. You can tether these archos tablets to a phone via bluetooth for internet access. You can also hook most USB peripherals to the USB port, but I can't say for sure if a USB 3G dongle will work as I haven't tried it and don't have one to try.

  54. hi i finally got my archos 70IT 250gig. thanks to 4d for solving my queries before hand. i m loving it every moment. updated ota to 2.2.1.

now the only issue is that youtube app crashes everytime i open it. although it works well in the browser. couldnt find a solution.

cant even uninstall the app from system and it doesnt even install the youtube app i picked from internet.

    any suggestion.

    ReplyDelete
  55. VA: As I remember, I had to use a terminal emulator to type in a command to delete the youtube app, then it would let me download the new one from Market. Another solution can be found at http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=73&t=47493

Search those forums for your Archos 70 problems. I also visit there.

  56. Ok, I have the Archos 70 250gb now,...video playback is quite nice on it. Angry Birds (seems to be what we all use as the deciding app for these devices,...) runs quite well.

I have yet to test out the audio playback, and I'm having network issues @home so I have yet to test the internet capabilities for myself.

Overall, for what I paid (a good $100USD or so less than market price), I say I have a great device for a song and a dance here. Me likey!!!

  57. more issues in archos 70 -
the usb host is very moody. i have tried mobile phones of various brands like nokia, htc, etc.
and plenty of pen drives. a nikon digi cam and canon camcorder. it only detected rarely a phone or pen drive. cameras never. there is some big time compatibility issue with it.
the tethering is also very sad. i tried a simple nokia music phone and a htc smartphone with built in wifi tethering. it connected to nokia on the first go but never with htc. later when i some how managed to connect htc now every time it says 'identical profile already exists' now there are both DUN profiles of nokia and htc but none work. and it did not detect my htc built in wifi router as well.
so much so for the plenty of connectivity and options.

  58. @VA Thanks for listing these problems. I was planning to get either the 70 or 43 to use while travelling and was hoping I could use it to back-up photos, but now not so sure.

Has anyone else tried to use it for this purpose? Is it at all suitable?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Ok 4d you have tested samsung p3 and i have used it too. It had this exceptional feature of connecting mobile over bluetooth to send and receive calls. I wonder if we can do thw same on archos 70. It will be awsome.

    ReplyDelete
  60. @VA: No mention of that capability from Archos on that capability for the 70. The Archos 43 would be a better candidate as it has speaker and mic in the appropriate places. The P3 though has the option for Mobile Phone right in the Bluetooth settings while no devices except Samsungs do. Of course their may be an android app for that.

  63. Hi 4d,

Thanks for your all the details on the Archos 70 250g I was undecided between 250 versus 8g, wasn't sure if it would be slow for such a large hard drive.

I have a question. Its about Windows Media Player. Archos says that you transfer files using Media Player. I don't have Windows Media Player installed on my PC will I still be able to download without it? I use Winamp and VLC.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Sue: The 70 with hard drive should work fine with Winamp. Or you can just drag and drop media to it when it is mounted to your PC. Looks like an external hard drive. I don't have the 8gb version so can't tell you how much slower the 250gb version might be if any. I'm happy with mine though.

Sometimes gives message "cannot play format" then plays OK on trying again. WMP mostly had covers but they did not download. I will try another machine.

  69. This is a great review! I have some questions that I hope can be answered before I decide whether or not to buy one.
    1. Can anyone feedback on battery life please?

    2. I want to be able to transfer photos on to it, has anyone been able to do this with a Cannon digital camera and a usb cable? If so, what is the best cable to buy and where can I get it from? Has anyone actually succeeded in transferring photos from their camera to their A70?

    3. Has anyone experienced problems when using this for storing / play back of audio files?

I'm going travelling next year and am looking for a 'catch all' device that I can use to store all of my music and film collection on as well as storing and uploading photos to the internet - just for a bit of extra security in storing them really. From the reviews I've read this device certainly looks like the best one but you all seem like you know far more than me so any advice would be hugely appreciated!!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Thanks for the compliments, Anonymous. I've found the battery pretty well lives up to the specs I listed in the review. 7 hours or so with wifi on, screen on, and media playing. Longer with the screen off and just music playing. I haven't had any troubles with mine, but then I don't travel with it.

It is getting dated though, so you might want to look for Archos' gen9 models, which also are available with hard drives.

Can't comment on photo import as I don't have the needed cable.

  71. hi 4d thinker,
do you think that $230 AUS is a good price for this thing?
    please respond soon.
    thanks

    ReplyDelete
  72. $230 AUS is $238.56 today in U.S. dollars. MSRP for the 70it 250gb is still $279 U.S.. Discounted to $260 or so. If the one you found for $230 is new unopened in original box then yes you are getting a good deal. You may want to wait for Archos' new 8" 250gb tablet though. It will have Android 3.2 on it, a better screen, and the same big storage option.
The 70it is last year's tech.

  73. does it even matter? i just want a good tablet for surfing the net, listening to audio ant that sort of stuff. even if i get the g9 whats the point? i probably wont even use the 3g stick. ill probably stick to the g8 17.5 cm diagonal screen 8gb version. as i mentioned above; i do not need 3g capabilities and since it is $300 + i wont get it. we can just connect it via hotspots-wifi.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Nothing wrong with buying last year's tablet, except its battery is likely a year old already and likely won't last as long as the battery in a newly manufactured tablet. There will also be new apps available to take advantage of the faster processors, although they'll most likely be games. Get the 70it if you want. Just consider those things.

  75. I have this problem with my archos 70 250G Internet tablet, The internal storage of 250G is not detected. This is only 3 weeks old.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Assuming you mean it is not detected when plugged into your PC, there are a few more items I'll need to know. Has it ever connected to that PC with the same cable? Did you select "Mount" from the 70 after plugging it in? Do other devices get detected using the same USB port on the PC? Have you tried re-booting the PC and trying again?

If none of the above helps, but the 70 works fine, then try a different PC, perhaps that of a friend. Try the cable with another device too, as cables sometimes short out. Hope that helps.

  77. Dear 4D. I have a A70 and it keeps saying low on internal memory., but still has in excess of 6gb. Am I right thinking this is RAM been taken up bt apps? If so can I store apps somewhere else?
    Thanks

  78. Paul: Yes, the error is most likely about internal RAM. If you have quite a few downloaded apps installed, you best bet is to delete any you aren't using regularly. Honeycomb has an option to move apps to SD storage, but I don't believe the A70 does.

  79. Hi 4D! Great review!! I was wondering if I should get this and the review totally decided for me. Just one question: are you sure A70 250gb has 512mb of RAM instead of 256mb? I looked all over the internet and this is the only place that says A70 has 512mb of ram...

  80. Yes, I'm sure my 70it 250 has 512mb of system RAM. This tablet and this review is more than a year old now, so I suggest looking at some of Archos' newer devices or competing tablets.

  81. I've had my 70 25ogb for 10 months now and it has worked fine. battery life is pretty good and hard drive spin is hardly noticeable. memory detail is 256 MB with internal detail of 1.5 GB. does have a small lag only when skipping though video, but with a hhd that is expected. Had mine on for 4 hour now in my case i just pulled it out and is only slightly warm.
